Binge eating disorder (BED), is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating, often accompanied by feelings of loss of control. In addition to psychological factors such as stress and anxiety, micronutrient deficiencies can also contribute to the onset and persistence of binge eating.
A deficiency in certain micronutrients, such as iron, zinc and magnesium, can lead to disturbances in neurotransmitter function in the brain, affecting impulse control and mood. This, in turn, can increase the risk of binge eating.
In addition, an unbalanced diet, often characterized by an excessive intake of processed foods and sugars, can lead to micronutrient deficiencies that can further unbalance the body and exacerbate binge eating.
It is therefore important to consume a varied and balanced diet rich in micronutrients to reduce the risk of binge eating. Consult a professional if you are concerned about your eating habits and/or health.
